A MUM has launched a parents’ petition after her son was turned away from school for wearing red and white on St George’s Day.

Luisa Wilfort, 32, says she already has 200-plus signatures on the plea to governors at East Wickham Junior School, for children to celebrate the English saint’s day.

Mrs Wilfort, of Blithdale Road Abbey Wood, took Alfie, eight, to the Wickham Street, Welling school last Friday, dressed in a white t-shirt, red jogging bottoms, with a red stripe through his hair.

His brother Charlie, five, who attends neighbouring East Wickham Infant School, was similarly dressed.

But while the infant school celebrated England’s national day, Mrs Wilfort was told Alfie could not dress in red and white.

She said: “The school told me to take him home and get him changed.

“I said I did not have the car with me because I was spending the day at a friend’s.”

The school suggested she wash the red out of Alfie’s hair and dress him from the lost property box, but Mrs Wilfort refused.

She said: “The school celebrates Diwali and other festivals and I have no problem with that.

“But the children should also be able to celebrate St George’s Day.”

A spokeswoman for the school said children were reminded the day before they had to be in school uniform and Alfie was one of only three children out of 325 who dressed up.

She said the school celebrated the day with flags and bunting, an assembly about St George and a special lunch.
