TESCO has rubbished reports it plans to build "mini-villages" in the area.
This week several national newspapers claimed the supermarket giant was planning to build mixed-use "mini-villages" with living and shopping areas in Woolwich and Streatham.
The company has denied planning anything so large scale but confirmed it is in talks with Greenwich Council over building homes and offices in Woolwich.
A spokesman said: "There is no new news here. We submitted a planning application to the council in 2007 and it was approved.
"The Woolwich development in particular is a good news story. We are providing investment, jobs, amenities and social housing in an area of London where other investors do not want to invest.
"We are proud to be able to invest in these communities and to provide significant numbers of jobs to both the construction industry and the wider economy.
"But the term 'mini-village' is very far from the truth."
In 2007 Greenwich Council gave outline approval for Tesco to build 960 residential units as well as offices, food and drink shops, and car parking spaces for these facilities.
Tesco and the council is still in discussions regarding the planned appearance of some of these buildings, and a start date has not yet been set.
