ATHLETES, friends and family have turned out at the David Ives Stadium in Erith to run in an event to commemorate a young athlete.
Joe Allen, 20, a promising 1,500m runner, died in March last year, after a five-year battle with a brain tumour.
Fellow runners at Bexley Athletic Club, where Joe was a member, organised the Joe Allen Commemorative Mile at their home stadium in Avenue Road, to raise cash for paediatric brain tumour research at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey, where Joe was treated.
Nearly 300 people turned out for the run, which was held over three events.
Participants included everyone from runners representing Great Britain at international level to mums pushing buggies.
The event raised more than £2,000.
Anyone who wants to donate in Joe’s memory can make cheques payable to the Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign and send it to Fundraising Department, Royal Marsden Hospital, Downs Road, Sutton, Surrey SM2 5PT and marked on the back “paediatric tumour research in memory of Joe Allen”.
