FIREFIGHTERS remain at the scene of a fire which damaged a school in New Cross this week.

It is understood fire crews from New Cross firestation will be at Haberdashers Aske’s Hatcham Temple Grove School until later this morning, damping down hotspots and ensuring the fire does not re-ignite.

Around 50 people had to be evacuated from their homes on Tuesday (April 6) after a fire raged at the school.

Staff and contractors were also evacuated.

The school was being refurbished during the Easter holidays and a gas cylinder, which is thought to have contained propane gas, was involved in the fire.

In a statement on the Haberdashers Aske’s website the federation’s chief executive officer Dr Elizabeth Sidwell said: “The school will be closed until further notice.

“Plans are currently under way to ensure provision is provided from across the Federation sites for all children returning on Wednesday April 21.”

The roof and second floor were badly damaged by the blaze which started at the school in Monson Road at around 3.10pm on Tuesday (April 6).

The cause of the blaze is now under investigation.
