FUNDING has been announced to improve road networks across the area as part of the largest single regeneration project in Europe.

An investment of £23m by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), which is funded and sponsored by the government, means a £200m transport programme can now go ahead.

The cash allows up to 10 road upgrades as part of a scheme to build 25,000 new homes and create 50,000 jobs by 2025.

Improvements include upgrades to the A2, enhancing traffic systems in Dartford and Gravesend town centres and extending the area's Fastrack bus system.

These will enable the major housing developments in the Ebbsfleet Valley as well as Dartford and Gravesham to go forward.

Gravesham Council leader Councillor Mike Snelling said: “This is fantastic news for which we in Gravesend and Dartford have been waiting a long time.

“We can now proceed with confidence with the regeneration schemes planned for Gravesend Town Centre.”

Dartford Council leader Councillor Jeremy Kite said: “This is good but belated news.

“This is the minimum amount we would accept to press ahead with any developments.

“You can’t build more houses without there being an efficient road network to go with it.”

Chairman of the Kent Thameside Regeneration Partnership, Kent County Council cabinet member for regeneration Councillor Kevin Lynes, said: “This homes and roads funding package is absolutely critical to the regeneration of Kent Thameside, which is the largest single regeneration scheme in Europe.”

HCA regional director David Edwards said: “This strategic investment brings together public and private investment to deliver the infrastructure we need to deliver new homes and employment in north Kent.

“We have put together an innovative funding programme which will enable high quality sustainable development in locations such as Ebbsfleet.

“The partnership between HCA, national agencies, local authorities and the private sector demonstrates that together we can secure major investment in the south east, despite the current economic challenges.”
