A RUBBISH dump's neighbour has slammed the Government for letting the site operator breach its licence.

Veolia Environmental Services (VES) is only allowed to pile rubbish up to 3m high at the dump in Waldo Road, Bromley.

A line marks out this height on the wall of the tipping hall, where the waste is stored before it is taken to landfill sites.

Nick Herbert, of Carlyle Avenue, Bromley, says the rubbish has exceeded this height on several occasions in recent months.

An officer from Government body the Environment Agency visited the site after receiving complaints from nearby homeowners and saw the piles of rubbish.

But nothing has been done to make VES stick to the terms of its licence.

Mr Herbert, 33, said: "I feel frustrated and annoyed. The Environment Agency claims on its website We are working hard to make the environment a better place for all of us'.

"However, in this instance it is not interested in doing this since it states the licence is very much out of date with new licences and is in need of major modification and redrafting'."

The e-commerce assistant manager added: "It seems odd to me the Environment Agency and Bromley Council knowingly let VES operate this site on licences which by their own admission are very much out of date'.

"It appears they are using it as an excuse not to enforce them."

A Bromley Council spokesman said: "We believe the Environment Agency is entirely satisfied with the way Veolia Environmental Services is operating the Waldo Road site.

"If it had concerns about the operation, we would obviously respond.

"We do have resident forum meetings and if residents have concerns they can be raised at the next meeting."

An Environment Agency spokesman said: "We regularly inspect the Waldo Road amenity site to ensure it complies with permit conditions.

"The condition is not an environmental one and at the next permit review is likely to be removed.

"We believe the issue of waste being over height at this site is not causing an environmental risk."
