A MURDER hunt is under way after a 29-year-man was stabbed in the head with a screwdriver.

David Rodway, of Orpington, died in hospital on Monday, after a fight in Bromley town centre on Saturday night.

Police were called at around 11pm to reports of two groups of young men involved in an argument in East Street, Bromley.

On arrival, Mr Rodway was found at the scene with serious head injuries.

An ambulance service attended and he was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital, in Farnborough.

Taxi marshall Tony Manzi, who witnessed the events, described the scene as "mayhem".

Mr Manzi, 52, said: "We saw a fight start on the corner of East Street and were on our way over when two police officers ran out of Market Square towards them.

"As soon as they arrived, the group just took off, leaving this poor soul lying on his own.

"He was on the ground by the bus shelter with a screwdriver sticking out of his head.

"He just looked like an average youngster on a night out.

"He didn't look that old, poor kid. It's hard to believe that someone could do this.

"He wasn't moving at all - to me it looked like it was already too late."

According to Mr Manzi, the fight, which involved between six and eight young men, was over "in a matter of minutes".

Mr Manzi praised the police and ambulance services for their speed in reaching the victim and assisted police in diverting buses after the road was closed.

Police believe the fight began following an argument earlier on outside the Walkabout pub on Bromley High Street.

It is believed the two groups exchanged words before separating. It is then thought they met again 200 yards away in East Street .

Mr Manzi, of Wood Lodge Gardens, Bromley, added: "Everyone seemed to be throwing their fists but to me it looked like they were all aiming for one person.

"There were quite a few people standing around in disbelief and quite a lot of young girls watching and crying at what was happening.

"I feel sick that any human being could do that to someone. It's not just his life, it is the life of his family and friends too.

"This sort of thing completely destroys people's lives. It's bad enough that they beat him up but why did they have to kill him?"

A post mortem is being held today at the Princess Royal Hospital's mortuary.

Two men, both aged 21, have been arrested in connection with the inquiry and were taken to south London police stations where they remain in custody.
