DOG owners have been targeted in a bid to make them think twice before they breed their animals.

As part of National Pet Week, which aims to encourage owners to act responsibly, the problem of stray Staffordshire bull terriers was highlighted at an event in Greenhithe.

Staffy Cross, a Sussex-based group, was set up last September in a bid to stop owners dumping their dogs on the streets.

Members handed out leaflets, played games of hunt the bone and encouraged visitors attending their stall at St Mary's Church, Mounts Road, to adopt a terrier.

Since the group opened it has re-homed 110 terriers.

In recent years, the number of Staffordshire bull terriers has increased dramatically as breeders try and cash in on their popularity.

However, breeders who are not able to sell the dogs before they start maturing are dumping them.

Group co-founder Sarah Barron, 24, said: "Dumping is a big problem across Dartford. We want people to get their dogs neutered and not breed them if they cannot look after them."
