DARTFORD, Gravesham and Swanley Multi-agency Autism Group has arranged an evening talk to give families and carers information, confidence and skills to look after autistic children.

The talk will explore conciliation skills to help parents deal with their child's school effectively, such as developing communication in difficult situations, requesting resources and attention for children on the autistic spectrum.

Previous talks held by the agency have included an introduction to the Social Stories technique, based on a theory by writer Carol Cray.

Dr Chandra Hegde, from the children's resource centre at Darent Valley hospital, said: "Parents, teachers or carers use their personal knowledge of a child to write a story.

"The plot describes one behaviour the child may have difficulty with, such as getting dressed or brushing their teeth, being carried out successfully. If this is read to the child everyday, it has potential to modify a behaviour they struggled with before."

The event is taking place on May 23 at the Kings Farm Primary School, Cedar Avenue, Gravesend, at 6.45pm. To book a place, call 01322 428240.
