SkillSet, the sector skills council for the audio visual industries, has organised a National Skills Day, to be held on May 25.

The aim of the event, part of National Learning at Work Day, is to have one day of the year on which the whole audio-visual industry, which includes TV, acting and written media, makes a commitment to skills development.

Last year 108 organisations supported the first ever National Skills Day, by hosting events and offering support to 5,000 workers.

The events ranged from a Dr Who masterclass, to tramp-to-vamp makeovers with Nicky Hamilton-Jones, to job swaps, stage fighting and how to cook a squid.

SkillSet believes although the industry has a very skilled workforce, there is still a skills' gap in some areas and professionals working in the industry need to be aware they should be continually improving and developing their skills and those of their employees in order to be successful.

Dinah Caine, chief executive of Skillset, said: "Companies across the UK have jumped at the chance to be part of an industry-wide event, which puts skills centre stage.

"It is extremely positive to see so many organisations seizing the opportunity to promote skills' development for their staff and giving them access to such a diverse and innovative array of activities.

"It really has helped to focus attention on the importance of continual professional development to the success of businesses and the need to make it a priority all year round."
