A PRIVATE investigator's family has asked police to re-examine a report about failed investigations into his death.

Daniel Morgan was found with an axe embedded in his head in the Golden Lion pub car park, Sydenham Road, Sydenham, on March 10, 1987.

Despite four investigations into the murder no-one has ever been brought to justice for the crime.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair's report about allegations of police involvement into the murder and the failed investigations was shown to Mr Morgan's family at a meeting with Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) representatives.

Their questions about the report will be looked into by the Met Police.

Alastair Morgan, 56, who has led the campaign to find his brother's killer, believes Daniel was murdered because he intended to blow the whistle on alleged police corruption.

Speaking after the meeting he said: "This was a valuable meeting and my family are heartened by the continuing support of the MPA."

An MPA spokesman said: "There was a constructive meeting between the MPA and the family and we will continue with them to work to answer their concerns. It is an ongoing matter."

The case papers will be reviewed by an independent barrister if Mr Morgan's family is not satisfied with the report after the police have looked into their questions.

There have been queries about the police handling of the case ever since Daniel Morgan's body was discovered.

The four inquiries into the case exposed many failings in the initial investigation.

These include the police only checking the alibi of one of the initial six suspects.

The victim's watch was stolen from the crime scene when it was under police control and one of the suspects, Detective Sergeant Sidney Fillery, was working on the murder investigation.

He was arrested upon suspicion of being involved in the murder but released without charge in 1987.
