THE Government has pledged to give £2.62m to Greenwich Council to improve road and public transport links in Woolwich.
The money comes after the council made a successful bid to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's (ODPM) Community Infrastructure Fund.
The council, in partnership with Transport for London and the London Development Agency, will use the money to improve the town centre.
New housing developments around the town centre and the Woolwich Arsenal site are expected to create additional demand for public transport.
Improvements will include developing a section of Woolwich New Road into a two-way public transport corridor and creating better access into the Woolwich Arsenal site.
A council spokesperson said: "This is great news for residents because it means the council will be able to ensure the necessary transport infrastructure is in place to meet the demands of high growth in the area."
