BEXLEY's reserve soldiers put up a good showing as they competed against 22 other Territorial Army (TA) teams for this year's Courage trophy.

The annual competition is designed to test the military skills of reservists from TA units across Greater London.

Bexley fielded a five-strong team from 265 (Kent and County of London Yeomanry) Signal Squadron, based in Watling Street, Bexleyheath.

The team was made up of Hugh Beattie, 33, Adi Keeble, 37, Brett Harries, 30, Jim Sutton, 23, and Taff Williams, 28.

Held at the Longmoor training camp in Surrey, the volunteer soldiers competed in a 30-hour challenge which tested their mental and physical strength.

It involved 12 activities, enacting a mock operational situation, which included weapon handling, shooting, mine and obstacle clearance, armoured vehicle recognition, navigation, fitness and first aid.

Although they did not win, competition director Ewan Cameron praised the Bexley team.

He said: "The team from 265 Signal Squadron demonstrated determination, enthusiasm and professionalism and I congratulate them on the level of skill shown."
