A HAVE-A-GO hero who was clobbered with a log after making a citizen's arrest says he has no regrets.

David Chillman says yobs make the lives of residents in Castlecombe Road, Mottingham, a misery.

The 40-year-old claims they steal cars and burn them out, as well as racing up and down pavements and roads on motorbikes.

On Sunday at noon, he spoke to three youths on motorbikes, who were riding in nearby Elmstead Wood and on the road and pavement, but they refused to stop.

The carpenter followed the boys to the wood at the end of the road and grabbed one to cheers and applause from other residents.

He intended to hold the boy, until police, called by his neighbours, arrived.

But before they got there a man in his 40s arrived in a jeep and asked him what he was doing.

When Mr Chillman told him, he said: "Are you some sort of grass or what?"

He picked up a log, which was about three feet long, raised it above his head and brought it down on Mr Chillman.

The father-of-three put his left arm up as the thug hit him twice on the left arm and smashed his watch.

The youths and the man got into a jeep and drove off while Mr Chillman was taken to Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup.

He has severe bruising to his left elbow and forearm, which is in a sling.

Mr Chillman, who moved to the road six months ago, said: "I don't regret it and I would do it again.

"Residents have been terrorised for years and someone had to do something.

"If my action makes them think twice because someone will stand up to them, then it was worth it."

A 45-year-old resident, who also lives on Castlecombe Road, said: "He's a real hero and we're very glad somebody took action. This has been going on for years."
