A TRADER has been fine £2,800 after council officers seized 671 items of counterfeit clothing.

Mubarak Patel trading as Bailwood Fashions in Lewisham High Street pleaded guilty to 14 specimen charges of exposing counterfeit items for sale.

Greenwich Magistrates Court heard trading standards officers raided Patel's shop following a series of test purchases.

They found a number of fake garments on open display and a large number hidden behind racks of other items.

Items included fake sweatshirts, jeans, jackets and jumpers bearing the trade marks of Armani, Moschino, Tommy Hilfiger, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and Timberland.

Head of Lewisham Trading Standards John Pye said: "Although fake items may be cheaper than the real thing, they are usually of inferior quality and the consumer does not get value for money.

"Traders selling fakes are competing unfairly against other businesses selling the real thing."
