Young Hampton Wick rower Edward Fox struck gold and bronze for Britain in the Coupe de la Jeunesse youth European Rowing Championships in Italy.

The 17-year-old Tiffin School pupil has just returned from Lake Candia as part of the 40-strong team that won the boys' and overall team trophy.

Edward, a member of Kingston Rowing Club, is following in the footsteps of his older sister Claire who recently scooped bronze in the U23 Nations Cup in Greece.

Edward won his place after extensive trials throughout the year ranked him in the top five or six junior scullers in the country, and he was chosen to stroke the quad sculling boat in the championships.

Other crew members were Peter Wells, 16, from Queen Elizabeth High School, Miles Kelly, 18, from Wycliffe College and Steve Pugh, 18, from Walton Rowing Club.

Despite illness just before the first event they won their heat and a bronze in the final. But in the second seeded event they struck gold.

Coach Matthew Hackett said: "They gelled together brilliantly as a team.

"It has been several years since Britain has won the quad gold in this event."

And a delighted Edward said: "The gold makes all my hard training worthwhile. I'm looking forward to bringing back a world junior medal next year."
