A 58-year-old woman has appeared in court accused of harassing her neighbours in a landmark victory for Croydon Council.

Gillian Turner, of Brigstock Road, Thornton Heath, admitted four counts of harassment against her neighbours between March and May 1997, when she appeared before Croydon Crown Court on August 11.

Sentencing was adjourned until September 18 for reports and medical assessments.

The council says this was the first successful case it had brought against a private home owner.

A spokesman told the Guardian: "It further strengthens Croydon Council's message that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated in the borough and that it will not hesitate to take a tough legal stand where necessary."
