A BUSINESS leader fears an increase in crime as a result of the introduction of CCTV in Orpington and Beckenham.

As reported in last week's News Shopper council and business leaders launched systems in both town centres.

Business chiefs have launched an appeal to have CCTV introduced into Penge and Anerley amid fears criminals will be attracted to an area without it.

Co-chairman of Penge Business Forum Ian Cramp said: "I am puzzled why Beckenham received CCTV before Penge. Crime statistics recognise we need it more than other areas.

"We are concerned about the risk of displacement of crime in Bromley, Beckenham and Orpington compounded with other factors in Penge."

A council spokesman said: "The council deemed Beckenham and Orpington higher priority areas for CCTV than Penge and Anerley.

The three CCTV schemes in the borough have been funded entirely by Bromley Council.

Town centre manager for Penge and Anerley David Kerr said consultative meetings will begin in September to assess the need for CCTV in the area. He said: "Research shows people in Anerley and Penge want CCTV on the streets. We are concerned about funding, I imagine the project would have to cost more than half a million pounds."

The spokesman added: "We are drawing up a priority list for CCTV at present. Penge and Anerley may soon have CCTV in their streets. Before that can take place significant research needs to be undertaken including community feedback."

"CCTV has cost the council £2m to be installed. It is going to be a bit by bit process because of the money involved."
