AMBITIOUS plans by hotel giant Forte to expand its Epping Posthouse hotel as part of a multi-million-pound nationwide project have met opposition.

An extra 43 bedrooms would be built as part of the scheme which will see an extension demolished to make way for a new three-storey building boasting 83 bedrooms.

The Bell Common hotel -- on Green Belt land and in the conservation area -- would also have a so-called 'academy' with meeting rooms, board room and a staff restaurant.

But town councillors, while agreeing the design is an improvement on the current buildings, are concerned about the three-storey building and the loss of greensward which would be taken up by another 47 parking spaces.

Town Cllr Duncan Sturrock told the planning and environment committee: "Architecturally it has some merit."

But he added: "We objected to the Magpies Nest (the neighbouring restaurant) for one parking space, now they (Forte) are looking at putting another 40-odd. They're taking away greensward for hardstanding."

Concern was also voiced about the effect the new building would have on adjoining Bell Cottage, and the close proximity of the planned hotel service area.

Cllr Letitia Berry said: "It's a very sensitive area. It's not as if it's somewhere that's tucked away. It's in the Green Belt and in the Conservation Area."

A Forte spokeswoman said the scheme was part of a £60m nationwide investment into Forte hotels this year and more details of the Epping scheme would be announced when planning permission is granted.

A final decision on the application will be made by Epping Forest District Council.
