Mystery still surrounds the death of a Battersea alcoholic, an inquest heard on Thursday.

Andrew Glass, 54, was found slumped in the kitchen of his Ashley Crescent home on July 21, at about 10am.

He had been stabbed 17 times in the chest and was covered in cuts on his arms and neck.

Police found two blood-stained knives and a blood-stained hammer beside Mr Glass's body. They originally treated his death as murder but a post mortem report revealed that Mr Glass could have killed himself.

Westminster Coroner's Court heard that officers were unable to establish a motive or find witnesses to convince them he was murdered.

The court also heard that Mr Glass had told his daughter Sharon he 'might as well top himself' just weeks before his death.

Investigating officer DC Robert Leigh told the Court: "Most of our inquiries have come to a conclusion. However, I would not describe it as a closed file."

Westminster coroner Dr Paul Knapman adjourned the case until September 10.

He said: "If nothing changes in the next few weeks it is quite likely I will record an open verdict in this case."
