News that Streatham has one of the worst pavements in London is the latest indignity for the "fairy godmother" part of the borough, it was claimed this week.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Brian Palmer said the recent Pedestrians' Association report blasting the state of the pavement in Knollys Road was no surprise.

"It's been neglected for the best part of 30 years. Pavements started off on a low level of investment and it seems to be getting worse."

And he said Lambeth Council had a habit of taking money and resources out of Streatham to put into other parts of the borough.

"We're the fairy godmother. We're always first for the council tax but they can't get us a town centre manager, the High Street is failing and we're on a continued course towards dereliction."

Lambeth has admitted it has a problem with pavements and has promised to carry out an audit, draw up a list of what needs doing and put it right.
