A PSYCHOLOGY graduate's drug problem caused him to suffer from paranoid schizophrenia and eventually killed him.

Daniel John Rufus Brook, aged 32, who lived in an annexe of Honor Lea Hostel in Carholme Road, Catford, was found dead on April 26.

Neighbours were alerted because of the smell coming from the flat and the deceased was found lying on the floor with a syringe still in his arm.

He had last been seen six days earlier.

Southwark Coroner's court heard he was in a rehabilitation unit after treatment for his variable mental state. The inquest heard he had suffered a psychotic attack while indulging in drugs in the Netherlands.

Pathologist Dr Ian Hill said Mr Brook had a very high level of heroin in his system, which constituted a substantial overdose. He gave the cause of death as a heroin overdose.

Southwark coroner Mrs Selena Lynch recorded a verdict of death by dependence on drugs and said: "He's come to a very early and sad end."

She told his family: "I hope none of you blame yourselves. It's a sad fact that drug addiction causes horror in families."
