Merton Council is committed as part of its policy to improve the environment for Merton to provide specific routes for cyclists and has made considerable progress with this.
However this is not being respected by a growing number of cyclists who insist on riding along the pavements. When asked politely not to, the response is invariably abusive. Small children, parents with buggies, older people and the visually and physically disabled are all at risk.
Many of these cyclists' behaviour is also thuggish and from the speed they travel, they appear to regard the pavement as their exclusive property.
This must be tackled by the cycling lobby as these people are creating a negative image of cyclists as a whole.
