Cyclists are planning a protest in Richmond Park tonight (Friday) against its continued use as a through-route by car drivers.

They plan to deliberately slow down motorists, despite the fact this could result in angry confrontations. And they are inviting others to join them in their protest.

"We feel it's time the authorities did something about the increasing amount of cars that use Richmond Park. It's a beautiful park and we want good things for it," said John Repsch, who is taking part in the ride, due to reach the park about 7.30pm.

"We are also calling for better facilities for cyclists, such as more cycle lanes, lock-ups and washing facilities in businesses and incentives for cyclists instead of car drivers."

Spontaneous

The ride is not being organised by a specific group but is an off-shoot of a spontaneous gathering of cyclists which meets every month in central London.

Their protest is the latest in a history of controversy about motorists pouring into the park through one of its several gates.

A report into all the Royal parks by Dame Jennifer Jenkins called for some restriction of car use in Richmond, but Inspector Andy Hasted from the Royal Parks Police said many people, such as members of the Friends of Richmond Park, had no problem with car-users.

And he said turning roads and car-parks back into parkland could be impractical and costly.

"But I am part of a group considering her recommendations and we are due to meet soon. The idea is under active consideration," he added.
