SATURDAY was a special day in the cricketing life of Mark Calnan who, aged just 16, made his debut in the Kent Woolwich Premiership match for Black-heath against Hayes at the Rectory Field, writes Kevin Impey.

Mark, who had representated Kent Under 16s earlier this summer made a mountain of runs doing so before securing a place in Blackheath's second eleven.

But, his rise to the first X1 can only be described as meteoric and, in true fairytale fashion, finished on the winning side and was at the crease when the winning strike was made, although at the non-striker's end.

A club spokesman said: "Mark has so much promise. He came in at number six and batted stylishly and confidently and was 15 not out.

"But, his day, did not quite all go to plan . . . he dropped a catch. Still, we can allow him that minor blemish on an otherwise pleasing debut."

Blackheath, with Richard Jerman top-scoring with 61, comfortably overhauled Hayes' modest 140-8 for the loss of five wickets.

Andy Watts' 5-43 did most of the damage to the brittle-looking Hayes batting.

The RACs went down heavily to second placed St Lawrence. After being set 222, the hosts were bowled out for 145 with only Wood, who made 51, showing any resistance.
