A HOST of events took place over the weekend to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

Crowds flocked to Greenwich on Friday Trafalgar Day to see the Duke of York light a beacon in honour of Lord Nelson.

Visitors were entertained by a group of amateur radio hams who broadcast thanks to a giant 65ft radio mast put up especially for the weekend.

Present generations of the Nelson family visited the maritime town to honour their ancestor.

On Saturday the celebrations continued with a fun day at the Greenwich Heritage Centre, Woolwich Arsenal.

The day included a range of free activities for youngsters, a Trafalgar exhibition and a performance by the Royal Artillery Band.

History fans from other boroughs also played their part in the commemorations.

Residents in Well Hill, near Chelsfield, joined hundreds across the country in lighting a roadside beacon.
