The world of work is a big place, and Yr 11 students only get to experience a small part of it, but after reading this article maybe I can change your mind about taking on students for work experience.

Employers giving students a chance for work experience is a wonderful opportunity for both the employer and the student.

Have you ever just thought in your place of work, I really could do with an extra pair of hands? Well, giving a student a chance the chance to work with you will give you just that. You will be gaining another person who will help you free of charge', who's there to listen and learn and willing to do so.

It would give you the chance to hear new fresh, unique ideas for your business from the student. It gives the student just as much opportunity as well, giving them an insight into the world of work. They could maybe be given a taster of a profession they have considered and then find out whether it was right for them or not.

I was lucky enough to find a place at Meridian Magazine, an A4 lifestyle magazine, and the only independently owned magazine in south London. It is based in Charlton, which gave me the opportunity to see what it was like to travel independently on trains and buses to and from work.

While I was there I helped out all the staff with little errands, while still learning bits and pieces about the company. I was also lucky enough to be taken out to business functions the magazine was connected to.

In my second week I was invited to the Chamber of Commerce meeting in Greenwich. I was also invited to the unveiling of the new Nelson statue. I was introduced to many people who are successful in the business world, with many having a series of successful businesses around London.

I also visited clients that advertised in Meridian e.g restaurants, and they were so hospitable they even offered us a free lunch which would have been very hard to say no to!

I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, and was quite sad when I had to leave. The lovely staff at Meridian, Adrian, Annalee, Ben, Donna, Valerie and of course Joy all said I was a pleasure to work with and the feeling is mutual.

My time there has really made me think seriously about a career in media in the future.

If your business doesn't take on students for work experience already, I would really recommend it. There are so many opportunities for everyone.

For it would certainly brighten up your office to have a fresh face around the place!
