PEOPLE are being warned not to be tempted by rogue traders who doorstep residents offering to do work.

Bexley Council's trading standards team has launched a new hotline to give advice and support to people worried about falling victim to unscrupulous workmen.

With the assistance of police, they are also carrying out spot checks on builders working on properties in the borough. Any found working illegally can be prosecuted.

People are being urged not to be pressurised into having work done by people on the doorstep. Turn them away and call the new hotline.

Rogue traders do not offer the required seven-day "cooling off" period for work costing more than £35 and often give false details.

People are advised to get quotes for work from reputable tradesmen and use the council's What Tradesman customer feedback scheme.

The hotline number is 07716 116452.
