A GROUP of professionals is collecting and sending sewing equipment to South Africa so women affected by HIV/Aids can learn new skills.
The Gravesend and District Soroptimist Club has collected unwanted sewing items including materials, hand-sewing machines, zips and buttons.
The women from Ubombo, in the KwaZulu-Natal province, are taught the skills at a sewing centre where they then work for a small wage after their training.
The hand-sewing machines require no electricity and will allow the women to make clothes at home and earn extra money for their families by selling garments.
Gravesend and District Soroptimists was formed in 1952 and has 40 professional and businesswomen members.
