TWO north Kent teachers have had their contribution to school life honoured.

More than 350 headteachers from across Kent, including delegates from Dartford and Gravesham, acknowledged the achievements of classroom assistant Rosalind Burgess, from Langafel Primary School, in Dartford, and Eric Gates, the former headmaster of Chantry Primary School, in Gravesend.

The pair had both been recognised for their achievements in the National Teacher of the Year competition.

Mr Gates won Headteacher of the Year for his work in the community and Mrs Burgess was "highly commended" in the Classroom Assistant of the Year competition.

Mrs Burgess, who has been teaching at the Longfield school for 10 years, is a valuable member of staff, according to headteacher Jean Craig.

Mrs Craig said: "Rosalind's contribution to the efficient operation of our school and the development of the learning of our pupils is great. I am delighted her efforts have been recognised in this way."

Mr Gates retired at the end of last year after 37 years of teaching, with three years as head of the Ordnance Road school.

KCC cabinet member for education Paul Carter described Mr Gates as a triumph.

Mr Gates said: "I was astonished and proud to win the award. It has been a lot of hard work but I have a great team which has tireless energy."
