CARING residents of Gravesend were thanked for their support for a native American tribe by visitors bearing gifts from across the Atlantic.
Former Gravesham Mayor Councillor Peggy Mersh welcomed Madeline McMillan, the only councillor from the city of Newport News in Virginia, USA, to support the plight of the Mattaponi, descendants of Pocahontas. George Maughan, from the Sierra Club which has also supported the campaign, presented the town with a letter of thanks along with water from the Mattaponi River and a pot made from clay from the river bed.
The Mattaponi is under threat from plans to build a huge reservoir which will destroy their ancient land.
