Hundreds of commuters arrived at work late yesterday (Thursday) morning, following a train derailment at Crystal Palace.
Connex confirmed the incident had resulted in severe disruption across their services in and out of central London.
Trains were not stopping at Crystal Palace, Beckenham Junction, Norwood Junction or Sydenham Hill.
A Connex spokesman said a bus shuttle had been organised between Birkbeck and Crystal Palace and that Croydon Tramlink was allowing Connex ticket holders use of its services.
A Railtrack spokesman confirmed the derailed train was one of its engineering trains which had come off the track at 5-10 mph at about 2am.
Speaking yesterday he said: "The passenger line is closed and we are concentrating on repairing the train in time for peak time hours this evening and tomorrow morning."
He said no-one was injured.
