WORK has begun to restore St John's Church in Bexley and the historic Dower House in North Cray Road, Sidcup, with grants from the Council's Bexley Heritage Fund.
The spire of St John's Church, Parkhill Road, Bexley, has been leaning over for a number of years due, in part, to damage caused by bombing during the Second World War. When the work is complete the steeple will have returned to its original shape. When it emerges from the cocoon of scaffolding and protective sheeting, the top third will have been completely rebuilt. New stonework is being especially cut to shape.
The Bexley Heritage Fund is giving a grant of £4,000 towards the renovation work, and the Church has raised nearly all the money it needed.
The Dower House in North Cray Road will also benefit from having its roof replaced.
