BROMLEY birdman Alan Craig is hoping his magnificent flying machine will land him a £25,000 prize.

Mr Craig, 44, of Kingsway, West Wickham, is entering his home-made glider in the Bognor International Birdman competition on July 22, in which pilots of man-powered planes compete to see whose flies the furthest by jumping off Bognor pier.

The competition offers a prize of £25,000 to anyone who can fly more than 100m but no-one has achieved this target in more than 25 years of trying.

Mr Craig, a workshop technician, said: "I love aeroplanes and there is a very big prize to be won. I'm confident with this glider I'll win."

Mr Craig's glider, which has a 30ft wingspan, has been built from aluminium tubes and nylon and is specially designed to have very low air resistance.

He is hoping to raise money for the Mines Advisory Group.

Anyone wishing to sponsor Mr Craig should call 020 8462 1131.
