TALENTED pupils of a music school in Bushey opened its doors to more than 400 children from seven local primary schools last week for its performance of the renowned children's classic, Babar the Elephant.

The performance was choreographed and orchestrated by staff and pupils of The Purcell School in Aldenham Road, Bushey on Thursday, June 28. It is one of many ways in which the school extends its talents and facilities to those within the local area, through the school's community programme, Outreach.

Due to popularity and demand, pupils staged two performances of the fictional favourite, Babar the Elephant, which tells the story of a little elephant whose mother is killed by hunters and who then makes his way into the world of humans, returning eventually to his herd to become their king.

The play originally written by the French composer Francis Poulenc for his niece and later adapted by David Matthews was narrated by the school's head of strings, Mr Ian Jewel, and performed by its instrumental ensemble, led by head of the wind section Mr Quentin Poole.

The young audience applauded the work of principal actors, of the school's Dalcroze Eurhythmics class, whose work will now form the basis and impetus for future arts projects to be carried out at a number of individual primary schools throughout the local area.
