HERTSMERE MP James Clappison says the AS-level system of further education has failed in its aims.

Speaking at a debate on the future of education in the House of Commons on Wednesday, June 27, he said the Government should address the concerns of parents and pupils and investigate whether AS-levels should be scrapped.

Under the present system of higher education, pupils study a wider range of subjects in their first year, specialising in the second. It has been criticised for placing increased pressure on young people.

Mr Clappison said: "I do not necessarily advocate the abolition of AS-levels, but it would be a good idea to consider the cases for and against them."
