Mill Hill Preservation Society chairman John Turtle warned members to be on their guard for "vulture" developers targeting the area.

"The vultures are hovering over Mill Hill waiting to pick up plum sites and develop in your gardens," he said at the society's AGM on Wednesday last week. "Do not assume that it will be you that will benefit from this. It may be your next door neighbour. If that happens the deterioration of our collective environment will be substantial."

His warning came after one resident in Shakespeare Road, Mill Hill, received a letter from developers County II Ltd stating that after a brief land survey: "We see your property as part of a potentially successful further redevelopment scheme."

The letter went on: "This company builds high quality homes and your property appears to offer an excellent building opportunity subject to the normal local planning consents."

Mr Turtle said there should be strong opposition to schemes such as that of Clearview Homes (North London) in Victoria Road, who want to bulldoze three houses and replace them with a block of 11 flats.

Mr Turtle said: "If we are to see Mill Hill in any way preserved we have to consider each of these applications to see if they are appropriate, and if they are not, oppose them vigorously."

County II Ltd refused to comment on Mr Turtle's remarks.
