A PLAN to build three office buildings in Denham Way, Maple Cross, has been rejected.

The decision was made by Three Rivers District Council's development control committee on Thursday, October 11.

The application, by Kvaerner Construction, would have seen larger buildings replace the existing buildings at Maple Cross House.

Residents of Maple Cross had expressed concern the new buildings would block the light and lead to a loss of privacy for neighbouring properties.

Leader of the council Mrs Ann Shaw said: "We have residents with properties close to the site. It is too big, it is too greedy and it is in the wrong place. We are glad it is going to look good, but not at the expense of local residents."

Council officers had recommended the committee approve the development, as long as it included £100,000 towards the local cycle network and sustainable transport services.

However, Councillor Shaw rejected this. She said: "However splendid the cycle path provided, we know everybody would come by car. "

Councillor Phil Brading agreed. He said: "Few people think of cycling to work. It is going to take a long time to turn people's opinions around."

Leader of the Conservative group Amrit Mediratta was also against the plan. He said: "I am concerned about the overdevelopment of the site."
