A hotline has been launched for residents to report derelict properties after new figures showed Bromley has more than 4,000 empty homes.

Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, launched the hotline with national housing charity the Empty Homes Agency.

New figures from the agency show there are 291 empty properties owned by Bromley housing associations and 3,870 in the borough's private sector.

The agency wants empty properties, such as shops, offices and other redundant buildings to be converted into accommodation for homeless people and those living in substandard or temporary accommodation.

Between April 1 and September 30 this year, the council has brought back into use 21 empty properties.

Local housing associations can apply for government grants for repairs to get houses back into a liveable state.

The owner will receive rent for the property, depending on the cost of repairs and length of the lease.

If you want to report an empty property, call the London Empty Homes Hotline on 0870 901 6303.
