YOUR front page report in The Redbridge Independent (Give Us A Pool, October 12) and subsequent article in The Wanstead and Woodford Guardian on the proposed sale of the site of Queen Mary, University of London's South Woodford Halls of residence are premature.

The site is not yet on the market and no formal planning application has been lodged with Redbridge Council.

As a publicly-funded educational establishment with strong roots and links in East London, Queen Mary will not "make millions" from the proposed sale.

The college plans to sell this site in order to make vital provision for increased student accommodation on its central campus at Mile End.

Guidelines that affect the subsequent use of the site will be determined by Redbridge's Unitary Development Plan. Queen Mary expects that future use of the site could enhance the local environment.

The possible refurbishment of a listed property, the removal of three tower blocks, and provision for social housing for local people could make a real difference to the urban landscape in this area.
