Taekwondo training at Croydon Greens Health and Leisure, Purley Way, received huge acclaim this week as young and old won national titles.

The older generation led the way with success in the first ever English League Championships, held at Darrick Wood Sports Centre, Bromley, with a haul of a gold, a silver, and two bronzes.

Star of the show, which focuses on the artistic rather than the fighting element of tae-kwondo, was Mike Hylton, 44, who won a gold in the individual patterns and a bronze in the pairs with Natalie Hart, 24.

Silver and bronze in the individual patterns went, respectively, to Linton Baddley, 28, and John Mascareuhaf, 27. Not to be outdone by their senior counterparts, two talented youngsters taking part in the tae-kwondo alliance championships in Liverpool the following Saturday won gold medals. Blackbelt Kylie Johncock, 13, from Catford won in the senior and junior blackbelt patterns and a gold in the junior blackbelt girls sparring.

Matthew Johnson, 15, from Bromley, won a gold in the mixed senior and junior sparring and a silver in the patterned section.
