A man with lung cancer has managed to raise more than £350 for children suffering with the illness at Mayday Hospital by selling off his fantastic doll's house.

John Jones, from Warlingham, spent five months making his huge plywood house as he battled his own illness at Mayday.

The 69-year-old decided to put his creation up as a raffle prize to raise money for children with cancer.

After spending three weeks on display in the hospital's main foyer, the raffle draw took place last Wednesday (October 10).

Sonia Brooker, lung cancer nurse specialist at Mayday Hospital, said: "John had a lot of time on his hands since he was diagnosed with lung cancer and he spent most of that making this amazing dolls house.

"He originally wanted to donate it to Mayday s children's ward but I doubt it would last that long!

"Instead we decided it would be a good idea to raffle it and give the proceeds to the children's ward instead."

John, from Warlingham, is currently in remission from his illness and he had hoped the dolls house would raise around £500 for the children's ward.

Sonia added: "The woman who won the prize collects doll's houses and she had grandchildren who play with them, so we are happy that it has gone to a good home."

The £350 will be used to buy toys and other Christmas presents for the Mayday children's ward.
