We'd pay more

Re: parking in Calderwood Street car park, Woolwich (News Shopper, October 10). As far as parking meters, pay-and-display machines or car parks are concerned, it is the driver's responsibility to buy enough time to cover the length of stay. The council enforces parking controls, whether in a parking bay or a car park. The same applies throughout London. Mrs Pinsent makes a valid point about the merits of pay at exit barriers instead of the current method of payment. However, it does cost more to install and monitor such equipment and the council would have to recover the costs, possibly by increasing parking fees. This would not attract shoppers to Woolwich town centre. By law, parking enforcement has to be self financing. Parking fines paid by motorists are used to pay for parking restrictions within the borough. Any money left over is used by the council for parking improvements, highway works or transport.

More buses

As part of Lewisham Council's pledge to improve bus services, we hope night buses are introduced on routes 185 (Lewisham to Victoria) via Catford and Forest Hill and 188 (Russell Square to North Greenwich via Deptford and Waterloo). Routes 321 (from Sidcup's 24-hour Tesco to New Cross) and 136 (Grove Park to Peckham via Lewisham Hospital) could be extended to central London, besides the local route Crystal Palace to Plumstead Garage via Lewisham and Brockley. All routes serving Lewisham could have more frequent timetables and disabled-friendly buses.

Extra routes

We hope London Central Buses Limited considers improving the timetable on route B16 (Bexleyheath town centre to Kidbrooke Ferrier Estate via Eltham High Street). A new frequency of one every 10 to 12 minutes during the day at peak times, Monday to Saturday, and every 20 minutes weekday evenings, Saturday evening and all day on Sundays would be welcome. Many people use the B16 daily to reach Welling and Bexleyheath. The buses on this route are excellent.
