I WISH to respond to the biased article, Anti-milk group targets schools (News Shopper, September 26).

The Dairy Council believes it is totally irresponsible to discourage children from drinking milk on the basis of unscientific and misleading arguments. There is a lot of scientific evidence supporting the benefits of milk.

Milk is one of the most nutritionally-complete foods and provides essential nutrients.

A 200ml glass of cow's milk gives a six-year-old more than half the daily requirement of calcium and it is rich in B vitamins and minerals.

While we acknowledge some people may be emotionally opposed to animal farming on ethical grounds, this is no justification for making inaccurate claims about the health implications of consuming dairy products.

Eliminating highly-nutritious foods such as milk and dairy products from the diet may lead to long-term health problems, and should not be done without good reason.

I trust next time an article is written someone from the News Shopper either contacts a local health professional for advice or visits The Dairy Council's website www.milk.co.uk for accurate information.
