An Edgware chemist who has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity is to retire on Saturday.

Popat Shah, 61, has been working at the Pharmco Chemist, Deansbrook Road, since 1968 and has proved to be both a pillar of the community and phenomenal fund-raiser over his 33 years behind the counter.

Mr Shah said: "We have raised £400,000 for charity over the last 24 years. All different charities internationally, nationally and locally." The many causes he and the staff at Pharmco have supported include Guide Dogs For The Blind and the North London Hospice in Woodside Park.

Edgware resident Pat Fraser, 69, of Edwin Road, Edgware, said: "He's a wonderful person who has provided great service over the years always very polite, amiable and helpful. It's very sad."

Mr Shah is now looking forward to a much deserved holiday, but plans to continue his work for charity in the future.
