VIRTUOSO oboist Janey Miller is returning to Ongar as Essex Young Musician of the Year 2000, with pianist Sarah Nicholls.

They will give a recital of oboe and piano music at Ongar Music Club, at the Budworth Hall, High Street, Ongar, at 8pm on Friday, October 26.

The programme will include works by Bach, Poulenc, Lutoslawski and Britten, alongside a frenetic bebop-inspired jazz piece, a colourful and magical picture of Niobe using electronic soundscape and D. H. Lawrence's Snake.

Janey, who studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she held an instrumental scholarship, has performed as a chamber musician and soloist across the UK, and given solo recitals on tour in Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic.

In 1998, she gave her Barbican debut playing the Vaughan Williams oboe concerto with the Junior Guildhall String Ensemble, which she later performed with them on tour in Spain.

Other engagements have included the Philharmonia Orchestra, and recording sessions with Boyzone and Toploader.

Janey currently teaches at Uppingham School, the Perse School for Boys in Cambridge and St Albans High School for Girls.

She also deputises at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama junior department, and conducts wind bands for the Bedfordshire Music Service.

In 1999, with percussionist Joby Burgess, she formed the oboe and percussion duo New Noise which has performed at various festivals including Warwick and Leamington, and given recitals at the Blackheath Concert Halls.

The duo were semi-finalists in the Gaudeamus International Interpreters Competition 2001, held in the Rotterdam Conservatoire in the Netherlands, and in March this year they made their Wigmore Hall debut.
