Merton borough has turned up trumps in the London in Bloom competition, in which the community as a whole is rewarded for brightening up the borough with floral displays.

The judges of the competition earlier this month awarded trophies to the most impressive floral displays created by streets, shops and restaurants in the borough. The Clearly trophy was awarded to the High Street, Wimbledon Village, for the best street in London, while village diner Villaggio Italiano was awarded joint second place in the restaurant section. The borough also received 30 certificates of excellence.

Merton also celebrated its own success at Merton in Bloom which brings together the best gardeners, from people running large allotments to those with window boxes.

The Challenge Trophy for the Leisure Garden and Allotment competition went to eight-time winner, Francis Yarham, member of

Cottenham Park Allotment and

Garden Association, Merton.

Sue Assinen, cabinet member for regeneration, said: This is an incredible achievement for Merton. Individual effort in floral displays in front gardens, public houses and businesses adds substantially to the attractiveness of the environment.

The borough of Merton was also one of the top five finalists for the National Britain in Bloom competition for best large city. Since it started in the 1960s, this event has become one of the largest horticultural competitions in Europe.
