Alfred Grech-Ellul, 63, retired, from Kingsdown Avenue, South Croydon:

"No. I think it serves the purpose as it is. I had to go to Purley Hospital myself for some treatment and I found it perfectly adequate.

"I don't think they need to waste money on building a new hospital and I like the 50's-style appearance but I agree it needs doing up a bit."

Tony Williams, 73, retired, lives in Wales but visiting family in Purley:

"I don't think Purley needs a new hospital because I don't trust them to make a good job of it. I think knocking it down would be a complete disaster."

Maureen Wood, 61, a minister of religion from Shirley:

"Yes I think it's a very good idea if it does as it promises and takes the pressure off Mayday."

Daniel Bailey, 22, lives in Cranmer Gardens, Warlingham:

"Yes it sounds like a good idea, especially to have a minor injuries unit, because if ever you have to go to Mayday you have to wait five or six hours to be seen."

Catherine Goucher, 22, a student midwife, lives on Whyteleafe Hill, Whyteleafe:

"I didn't even know there was one in Purley. Yes I want a hospital which makes it easier on Mayday because I'll be hopefully getting a job there when I qualify as a midwife!"

Kathy Speed, 50, a secretary from Manor Wood Road, Purley:

"Definitely. You can't really use it as it is can you what do they do there?

"I think it's a very good idea, particularly good if there was to be a casualty as Mayday is rather crowded."
