Battersea trades unionists are appealing for funds to restore the grave site of a founding father, strike leader and former cabinet minister.
Organisers hope Labour veteran Tony Benn will attend the ceremony to unveil the restored monument on January 27 in 2002 59 years after John Burns death.
Burns was elected MP for Battersea in 1892, one of the first socialists elected to parliament alongside Keir Hardie. He also angered some in the Labour movement by accepting a job in Lloyd Georges Liberal government in 1906.
He was convinced socialism was the answer to inequality and supported Britains first black mayor, elected in Battersea in 1913.
Donations to the restoration appeal can be sent to John Burns Appeal, c/o BWTUC, 898 Garratt Lane, Tooting SW17 0BN.
