I would like to turn the spotlight on Wandsworth Councils indefensible decision to charge weekday parking rates in Battersea Park last August Bank Holiday Monday.
We spent an enjoyable day in the park with our little boy, visiting the zoo, taking a boat out on the lake, having a picnic lunch and going to the
playground.
We returned to find that we had been given a ticket (along with dozens and dozens of other cars), despite the fact that we had paid £1 the weekend rate for parking and there was no sign anywhere to tell motorists that weekday rates were in force that day.
When I appealed I got a letter from the council which was nothing more than an essay on weekday parking charges and restrictions.
I dont have a quarrel with the council levying parking charges and restricting parking during the week to prevent the park becoming a commuter car park.
However, I do think it is quite wrong to enforce the same charges and restrictions on a public holiday quite apart from anything else, this is saying people cannot plan any activity in the park that will take longer than four hours on a bank holiday, which seems ludicrous for a public amenity.
Maybe next time well just go to London Zoo. It would have been a cheaper day out.
